3 out of 5 stars inconsistent   March 27, 2010
D. Moses (London, London United Kingdom)
I cannot possibly like this album. It is just too varied. On the one hand, it has the really nice melodic ballads that the Moody Blues are well known for. On the other, it has the pukeworthy mid 80's dance stuff that was all too present on the previous album. Listen to 'Miracle'. It sounds just like 'gemini dream' and other fast synthesiser heavy tracks from this period. But then interwoven into it are a really nice bit 'wanna walk from the shadows to the sun...' and a very melodic middle eight. This song clearly shows the two styles. Overall though, I never remember it once it finishes.
Other songs in the poor, synthesised category are 'Here comes the weekend'. Yuck, what a rubbish song with no tune and out of tune vocals. 'Breaking Point' shows some promise at the start, but then it meanders and isn't fully developed. Another disappointment. I may be in a minority, but 'love on the run' suffers from a very boring melody and John Lodge's vocals are very very out of tune. He hasn't sounded this bad. The chorus is very repetitive. I really find this yawn inducing.
'The river of endless love' is ok. A fast song in the puke inducing style. But I like some of the parts, even though John is out of tune and it is really another 'gemini dream' rehash.
The rest is better. 'I know you're out there somewhere' is a great Justin track, I particularly like the synthesiser parts and the melody. He also scores with 'Vintage wine' although it could have been made much more epic with help from Pinder and Thomas. It is just a bit shallow and doesn't really fit with other stuff here. I like 'no more lies' but it is so goddam simplistic. The lyrics are also so basic, they are almost patronising. 'Deep' is very atmpospheric and a perfect vehicle for Justin's sultry vocals. I like the chords and the bass synthesisers.
The best track is definitely 'want to be with you'. A lovely melody and simple arrangement carry this song to classic status.
Missing are Ray's contributions. If you take out the aforementioned three rubbish tracks 'Love on the run', 'Here comes the weekend' and 'Breaking Point', and put in some melodic Ray songs, it would easily elevate this disappointing effort (By Moodies standards) to a 4.

5 out of 5 stars The Best since Octave   November 28, 2009
Patrick Arbuckle (Portland, OR United States)
All you early purist need to question your balance. I have every studio release and this is among my favorites of their releases. And yes, I really liked Octave as well. Not too fond of their last 2, but they are still better than most of what is out there. Have seen them in all their incarnations and always love to hear songs from Sur La Mer. The Deep!
