Product Description From \Your Song"""""" to """"""""The Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore"""
Amazon.com This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. It once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'70s, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 1970's "Your Song" through 1977's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '80s hits like "I'm Still Standing" and "Sad Songs" add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush "The One," and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '70s golden days, represent the later years. Collectively, these tracks reinforce the notion that, despite Michael Jackson's later proclamations, John was once the closest thing post-'60s music had to a genuine king of pop, respected by hipsters and the mainstream alike. --Bill Holdship

A Great Beginner For Those Just Discovering The Brilliance Of Elton John & Bernie Taupin!! July 21, 2010 MUZIK4THAPEOPLE!! (Orlando, FL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you're younger and weren't around during Elton John's emergence and peak creative streak
in the 70's and are just discovering the brilliance of the work that he and Bernie Taupin
(and his amazing band) brought to life, then this is a good starting point for you.
If you are longtime fan who just wants a collection of most of his career-spanning hits
and don't always have the time to go through every album, then this is also a great
collection to have. The remastering sounds great and most of the hits are on here with the
exception of fan faves like "Skyline Pigeon", "Harmony" and other stellar album tracks which
may not have been released as singles, but were definitely loved in their time and beyond!
But as is the case with all great artists' whose careers span decades and who've enjoyed such
a high level of artistic creative achievement for so long, it seems almost impossible
to create an all-encompassing compilation which will satisfy every fans taste!
However, this one is very pleasing with the exceptions of the ones I mentioned
above and maybe a few more!----Still worth buying. (-:
I also like that they put a few of the songs from Elton's "iffy" early 80's
period when his music had kind of fell from grace and he was himself swirling
in the storms of addiction and indentity issues. Then, in the mid 80's he enjoyed
a return to form, the top of the charts, and began to conquer his demons head on!
By the early 90's, he and Bernie Taupin had separated for awhile, then gotten back
together to write sporadically, but Elton was expanding his collaborations
into broadway and film scoring, working with the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber
and others, coming into another fertile period creatively that has sustained
his legend into the 21st Century!
If you're not familiar with the 70's albums, perhaps this compilation will
inspire you to go back and discover what made Elton John one of modern music's immortals!
Dying Wish Fulfilled June 4, 2010 Annisha (Charlottesville, VA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My father was dying of pancreatic cancer in April 2010. He lived in a remote town in Minnesota and I lived in Virginia. Because he was a very guarded and private man, I didn't know much about him or his interests. During one of our last phone visits, I took a chance and asked him if he had a particular preference in music. He said that his favorite artist was Elton John, but that he didn't have any of his recordings. I jumped on Amazon.com and was thrilled to find this collection which had all his favorites, including "Daniel". Wanting to make one last effort to "connect", I had it shipped overnight as a surprise, hoping he'd get to listen to it before it was too late. He called the next evening with a smile in his weak voice, saying it had arrived that afternoon and that he'd been listening to it nonstop. To my knowledge, he was listening to it to the very end. Thanks, Amazon.
miss his jazzy piano playing May 30, 2010 lonebeaut (land of enchantment) I recently purchased "Elton 60", his Madison Square Garden concert DVDs, and I haven't tired of listening yet, mostly because of his extended, almost jazzy piano riffs that are arguably better than the basic songs themselves. This CD, in contrast, is his basic greatest hits collection as originally recorded, with not a lot of ivory tickling, which I miss. But still, Elton is Elton, and he's rarely bad, although some of his more recent hits that are included don't do much for me. I prefer his earlier songs, and fortunately there's plenty of those on these two CDs. It's a great collection to listen to while you're driving.
Elton John Greatest Hits 1970-2002 May 2, 2010 Verna F. Kay (Portsmouth, VA) This takes me back to my teen years. It has all of my favorite Elton John songs, mainly on Disc 1. Disc 2 is the later years when I didn't keep up with music as closely as in those teen years. It is great to get all of my favorites on one CD and at such a low cost. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Elton John, especially in the 70s.
Omission of "Mama Can't Buy You Love" on Greatest Hits April 16, 2010 T. Curry (Chicago, IL) Why has Elton John disowned this top 10 pop single (#1 Adult Contemporary) hit from 1979?
Is it because it is associated with disco or black artists (writers Casey James and Leroy Bell,
producer Thom Bell, Spinners background singers)?
Apparently this single has been left off the most recent greatest hits album. Fortunately
the single is on MCA's Happenstance Elton John greatest hits 1976 - 1986 CD.
However, the 2 disc greatest hits CDs also leaves off a top 15 hit and #1 AC hit
"Blue Eyes" as well. However a top 10 hit should have made it on the CD.
