Hair metal's final burst of popularity March 5, 2010 Justin Gaines (Northern Virginia) Just as the 90's got started, a new wave (and as it turned out, the final wave) of hair metal bands emerged on the scene to great success. They were a little less "glam" than the Hollywood scene, a lot more pop-oriented, and for a couple of years they absolutely dominated radio and MTV. Firehouse is perhaps the best known from this scene, which also included Slaughter and Steelheart. These bands were the soundtrack to my high school years, and I still get a kick out of their music.
Firehouse released their massively successful self-titled debut in 1990. It's an extremely catchy, extremely melodic pop metal offering with plenty of upbeat party rockers and of course some sappy power ballads. If there was a happy medium between Bon Jovi's wholesome rock and Ratt's sleazy hair metal, it probably sounds a lot like Firehouse. "Don't Treat Me Bad" and the ballad "Love of a Lifetime" were the huge hits from this one, but the album's best songs are the rockers "All She Wrote, " "Overnight Sensation" and "Oughtta Be a Law."
Yes it's cheesy and yes, it's completely dated, but I still have a lot of love for this album, as much for the memories it brings back as for the actual music. If you're looking for a fun 80's era rock album and a perfect snapshot of the rock scene in 1990, Firehouse is the perfect choice. Pop this in the CD player and pretend grunge never happened!
A GEM THAT WAS A FEW COUPLE YEARS LATE December 5, 2009 NECROSHINEGUY (Greenville, OH United States) I'm 32 years old and when i was around 13 i bought this disc for the first time. I remember loving this album as a kid but hadn't listened to it for years. I recently rebought this disc and was amazed how great this album was and is!!!! Great musicianship and every song has some amazing catchy hooks and even some double bass drumming!!! I truely believe if this album would of come out a few years earlier FIREHOUSE would of been one of the premier bands in the world!!!! Just my couple of cents on this great lost classic album!!!!! BUY IT!!!
A Strong Debut Album That Was Just A Few Years Too Late October 22, 2009 K. Fontenot (Louisiana) When Firehouse released their self-titled debut album way back in 1990, no one knew that a Seattle-based genre of rock would soon kill the hair band sound. Firehouse entered the hard rock game just a little too late and became a young casualty of grunge in the United States. Despite this, the band's debut album is still one of the best albums to be born from the hair band genre and has held up well over time.
This album features three charting hits for the band: the uber ballad "Love Of A Lifetime" and two radio-ready pop rockers, "All She Wrote" and "Don't Treat Me Bad."
As good as these songs are, the rest of the album can hold its own as well. Legitimate rockers like "Shake And Tumble" and "Lover's Lane" prove that the band was more than a ballad machine. Other highlights include melodic rockers like "Don't Walk Away," "Helpless," and "Overnight Sensation."
Lead vocalist C.J. Snare's voice sinks to a lightly rasping whisper and then rises to an all-out wail. Bill Leverty's guitar work is solid and he receives strong accompaniment from Perry Richardson's bass. On the skins, Michael Foster keeps Firehouse in check.
If you enjoy the sound of melodic rockers like Dokken, the pop rock stylings of Warrant and Winger, or are just wanting to relive those memories of the junior high dance, take Firehouse's debut album for a spin. It's one of the last best albums of the hair era before flannel and rain came into style. Highly recommended.
A nice debut album September 6, 2009 Kevin Nazario Bartolomei (Ponce, Puerto Rico) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Firehouse's first release is not groundbraking, but is a good one. Some very catchy songs help this band become some of the last stars of the hair band era. Still they rock and roll around after many better known bands have disappear. Is a good buy for the nostalgic factor alone.
