2 out of 5 stars Why dontcha skip this one!!   June 30, 2008

This is flat ot terrible. For starters, the sound quality is aweful. Sometimes the drums drwon out the vocals or guitar and the bass is invisible for most of the songs. Anyone who has seen Leslie perform in the last few years knows he's capable of much better performances than this. Some of the songs are so sloppy and loose you can barely tell what song is being played.
Seemed like a bargain. Well, I got what I payed for. It's too bad, because with songs like "why dontcha", "house of the rising sun","sparks"(the best sounding song on the disc),"rocky mountain way", and "crossroads", this could have been a killer set. It isn't.

The word is out on this puppy. The performances are great, but this a bootleg disc and the original label and performers aren't getting anything from this rip off release.

1 out of 5 stars Best of? Not even close   April 9, 2008

This is a licensed re-hash of some poorly performed live current-era Mountain tracks available on "Eruption Live in New York City" (1985) and "Eruption Live in Europe" (2003).

Four of the included tracks aren't even Mountain songs!! 'Rocky Mountain Way' (Joe Walsh), 'Crossroads' (Cream), 'House of he Rising Sun' (Animals) have no business being on a Best of Mountain CD. 'Why Dontcha' is technically a West Bruce & Laing tune, but its inclusion could arguably be considered legit.

With no sign of Felix Pappalardi save a dedication from Leslie on the intro to "Theme...", this album is as misnamed as it is misleading.

With so many other live Mountain albums to chose from, I would avoid this one like the plague. My personal favorite is still 'The Road Goes Ever On..." from a show in 1971 following the release of 'Flowers of Evil", and the band is in great form and at the top of their game. The 14 minute version of 'Nantucket Sleighride' alone is worth the price of admission, and you won't find a better interplay between Felix and Leslie (with the possible exception of the 'Swan Variations' on "Flowers of Evil") anywhere.

-GG/NJ, Mountain fan since 1969

5 out of 5 stars WHERE WAS THIS SET HIDING???   January 16, 2008

Why Dontcha? I had never heard West nor Mountain do it live since....1973! 35 years later...the hair stood on the back of my neck. And Leslie still shrieks like he did in the original....and Leslie is honestly playing better than ever. This set is NOT one of the over produced pigs with a canned live audience tracked over it. This is true live, Europe and US, and its great!! How much longer can Leslie last!!!!????
