Editorial Reviews:

Guitarist Jeff Golub's previous outing, Dangerous Curves, edged away from the R&B format toward a more rock approach. Do It Again revisits the soulful sound that Golub has made his own. The former Rod Stewart sideman has taken a break from composing this time out and chosen a batch of classic covers, displaying the same exquisite taste evidenced in his playing. Having had a hit with the Average White Band's instrumental "Pick Up the Pieces," he returns to the well for "Cut the Cake," and while he's at it, grabs their underappreciated "If I Ever Lose this Heaven." To inform anyone wondering where he garnered his influences, Golub gives us tunes by the masters: James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson. As always, his playing demonstrates the three Ts of all great musicians: the aforementioned taste, as well as in-the-pocket time and distinctive tone. If the record doesn't "rawk," it certainly grooves, and the solo on Eddie Harris's "Cold Duck Time" definitely pushes the boundaries of polite. Do It Again offers a great listen for fans of guitar and/or great soul tunes. --Michael Ross

3 out of 5 stars Funky, but just ok.   August 23, 2007

I really like the sounds of the old time funk, but sometimes the soft sounds get a little Kenny G-ish... and yes, that is a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty, funky, and relaxing CD.   March 5, 2007

I'm kinda late on this one, but I just heard Jeff's version of "Cut The Cake" on the radio last week, and I knew that I had to find out what CD it was from and buy it right away. What a funky tune! And the rest of the CD is great as well. Several enjoyable, funky, and relaxing cover tunes. I've seen Jeff play live several times, and his performances are always right on the money. Very tasty playing by one of my favorite guitar players.

Very few artist have the ability to turn old Motown tunes into successful jazz tunes without risking the outcome sounding like a cross between elevator music or a theme to a tv sitcom. While I'm not totally opposed to R&B remakes turned jazz, Jeff Golub is much too talented to not produce original music of his own. There are two tracks on this cd that are my favorites. Tracks 2 and 4. "Cut the cake, and "Jesus Children of America." Even though I'm at odds with the contents of this particular cd, Jeff Golub delivers outstanding performances on all tracks listed. Got cash? Get the cd. ( ^ _ ^ )

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Has Turned Me On To Jazz   August 31, 2002

After reading that last review, I knew I had to say something. I think this CD is amazing! A friend lent it to me, and after hearing the first three songs, I knew I had to have a copy for myself. And it's a good thing, because I have practically worn the CD out with my repeat playings. It's such a fun album, it only takes one listen to realize that this is a must-have not just for jazz-lovers, but for anyone who appreciates good music. Golub's interpretations will leave you with goosebumped arms and tapping feet. "Cut The Cake" and "Cold Duck Time" are standouts, but each song on this record stands on it's own. So, do yourself a favor and add "Do It Again" to your collection, you won't be disappointed.

What's not to love about this CD? Everybody digs cover tunes, and this eclectic mix is just what the doctor ordered. "Cut The Cake" displays Golub's funky, inspired style of playing amidst a base line that grooves. "On The Beach" sticks in your head and transports you into a convertible at night with the top down. "Jesus Children Of America", an inspired choice for a cover, is soulful and warm with breezy guitar work. "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" is for lovers, period - it is a gorgeous rendition of a great song with sweet vocals.

Jeff saves the best for last with a heartbreaking version of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" - the articulation is beautiful, the sentiment perfectly caught. Jeff Golub comes to play, and listening to "Do It Again" makes me just want more from this
stylish artist.
