Product Description Plays fine, sounds sublime. Fom a well cared for personal collection. Buy with confidence--see my feedback. Thanks and enjoy this great CD!
Amazon.com Never mind that in 2005--at the age of 20--Esperanza Spalding became the youngest instructor in the history of Berklee College of Music. It's what's on wax that counts--or CD, or MP3, if preferred. On Esperanza, her debut set for Heads Up International, Spalding presents a prowess on the acoustic bass that many bassists with far more experience could be inspired by. Need proof? Check out "Mela," on which Spalding's chops on the upright are matched (if not exceeded) by her tangerine-and-honey vocals. There is a lilt in her voice that, to be sure, puts the blind optimism of her youth front and center. But who needs another jaded jazz singer? This multi-lingual set starts off with the mellow, mid-tempo "Ponta De Areia." From there Spalding winds her way through an appropriate group of mostly self-penned songs that are simultaneously sweet, commanding, calming, and intense. Of particular note are the hopeful "Espera," and her take on "Cuerpo y Alma" (the jazz standard "Body & Soul" in Spanish). And yes, purists, she can scat. Her name, Esparanza, is the Spanish word for "hope." Here's hope for a bright future and satisfying career following this wonderfully refreshing album. --Eric C.P. Martin

Refreshingly Talented! July 29, 2010 Hit City Music inc Ms. Esperanza Spalding's voice is a sweet and smooth treat. Her lyrics and melodies are thoughtful and delightful. "I Know You Know" is definitely one of my FAVORITES, and I LOVE the way she slides into the groove on "Samba Empreludio"... ofcourse, it doesn't hurt that she is SO easy on the eyes! ENJOY
Esperanza rocks ! July 3, 2010 jim (Ossining, NY United States) She is such a wonderful artist, I'm a rock and roll fan and yet with more eclectic tastes I love the artistry of superb players
no matter what genre. Esperanza is such an artist, on an instrument usually found in the background she shines like no other fabulous music all around !
A great talent! June 24, 2010 F. Weaver (Austin, TX) I discovered a new artistic voice when I ushered her show in Austin. Esparanza is AWESOME and I have been thoroughly enjoying her music and talent on this album. I'm looking forward to the next one.
A Wonderful Surprise April 29, 2010 Timothy R. Chilvers (Senglea, Malta) This young, talented, and to me, previously unknown performer came to my notice thanks to an enthusiastic review in a recent 'New Yorker'. I have been a classical jazz fan since my youth, have visited New Orleans several times, but make no claims as to being up to date or conversant with the latest trends. But despite this, the review encouraged me to send off to Amazon for a copy of her CD; and after hearing it, I was convinced of the truth of the review's proposition that a great new talent had comme to jazz. Her bass playing is remarkable, her singing moving, and the backing all and more than it should be be. I found myself almost catching an echo of fado within the jazz.... I might say that 'I came to scoff and stayed to pray.'
fabulous April 25, 2010 Heidi E. Bollinger (Rochester , NY) This album is a pure pleasure. A rich fusion of musical traditions, full of subtle joys. The vocals remind me a little bit of Corinne Bailey Rae, only more easy and effortless.
