Editorial Reviews:

Few performers have ever been so inimitable as the Reverend Al Green, so it's no surprise that the starry young collaborators who join him on the superb Lay It Down simply let the man sing in the way he knows best, and make their own contributions fit around his. Despite the presence of such luminaries as John Legend, Anthony Hamilton and Corinne Bailey Rae and the support of co-producers James Poyser and the Roots' Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson, this is very much Green's show. But although the smart production attempts to update his classic sound, Lay It Down recognizes and preserves its enduring strengths. ?uestlove's brilliant drumming perfectly recaptures the languid snap the late Al Jackson Jr. brought to Green's legendary seventies hits, Larry Gold's string arrangements are measured and minimal while crack guitarist Chalmers 'Spanky' Alford, on one of his last sessions, demonstrates precisely how to balance rhythm and detail (The album is dedicated to his memory). Songs like the elegant title track, where Green out-emotes the decades-younger Hamilton, "Take Your Time", a lovely deep soul duet with Bailey Rae, and the quietly propulsive closer "Standing In The Rain" are naggingly timeless, though there really isn't a weak track on this excellent record. Lay It Down is a gift from one generation to the man that inspired them.--Steve Jelbert

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD   September 2, 2008
Victoria Barrett (BETHANY LA USA)
Al Green have done it again. The Cd was simply great another Al Green hit. I love his music and everyone else will also. When I found out that he had another CD coming out I just had to buy it for myself.

3 out of 5 stars It's good but not his best by far   September 1, 2008
N-Chap (Texas)
This cd gets 3 stars because it's the great Al Green singing, the production values are super and the backing musicians are some of the best. The material is forgettable and does not compare with his earlier hits. The arrangements seem like he is trying too hard to be what is happening today, almost a hip-hop feel at times. While the rhythm section knows how to make the music groove, I prefer the backbeat and groove of the Hi Records rhythm section. I cannot think of a single track that stays with me. I have not listened to this for awhile, and while looking at the track listings to comment on a some of the songs, none stand out to remember them well enough to comment. I recommend one of his greatest hits albums or really anything else he has recorded. He is so good you can't go wrong buying anything with his name on it, including this one.

5 out of 5 stars Al's still got it!!   September 1, 2008
Deborah A. Bickham (Chicago, IL)
I bought this CD to give to a friend, but then I decided to listen to it to see if I should get one for myself. It is so nice and smooth that I kept it for myself. I was amazed at how good he still sounds. He really does LAY IT DOWN!!
