Frequently bootlegged and now digitally remastered by Jimmy Page, these tapes capture a 25-month (1969 to 1971) arc in which Zep's sound grew to encompass the speed rush and jazz/blues festival stuff of their 1969 debut, the fully developed folkie musings of "Going to California" (in which Plant vowed to make a hejira right up to Joni Mitchell's front door), and the band's modestly popular multilayered epic "Stairway to Heaven." The Sessions also give a glimpse of nearly off-the-cuff invention in an intense take on Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues." Most other white blues musicians would've rushed to get this on vinyl; Page and Plant instead used it for parts, most notably taking its profound acoustic freneticism for Led Zeppelin III. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Wow. I mean wow.   July 10, 2010
Taiho (Tokyo, Japan)
The title says it all. For Zepheads this is a must. They're all great but for me the stand out track has got to be "Thank you" on disc 2. The first time I heard it I had that rare feeling of having experienced something of historical significance that it practically moved me to tears (I've had similar experiences when listening to the 1st movement of Mahler's 1st Symphony, seeing the original of "The Scream" for the first time, finishing Mishima's "The Sea of Fertility: and listening to Woody Allen's "Moose sketch"). Actually, the first time I heard this track I was onthe London Underground and I was so blown away that I listened to it 3 times in succession and completely missed my stop. It's probably the best guitar solo that Page every played. 'Nuff said. Buy 10 copies of this album, \give the \ 9 to people you love or who you hope will love you soon, keep the other one yourself and play it until you wear it out. Then buy another one.

5 out of 5 stars The Mighty Zeppelin   March 9, 2010

The 1969 sessions on disc 1 are gritty and powerful, sometimes even more so than the studio recordings of the same material. Zeppelin performs originals like the fine folkish "What Is And What Should Never Be", the fiery rave-up "Communication Breakdown", and the psychedelic "Dazed And Confused", but the majority of the 14 songs are blues covers.
The Otis Rush-hit "I Can't Quit You Baby" gets the Zeppelin treatment, along with Sleepy John Estes' "The Girl I Love She's Got Long Black Wavy Hair" (one of the highlights of the album), and Willie Dixon's all-time classic "Whole Lotta Love".
Robert Johnson's "Traveling Riverside Blues" is another highlight; a tremendous electric rendition burning with Jimmy Pages' urgent slide guitar playing. And Zep's piano-driven blusn n' boogie version of Eddie Cochran's "Somethin' Else" is pure rock n' roll fun.
You will note that a couple of songs are here in two different versions...the two renditions of "Communication Breakdown" are quite similar, while the second takes of "I Can't Quit You Baby" is two minutes longer than the first.

Disc 2 is highlighted by a tight, muscular "Immigrant Song", a swaggering "Heartbreaker", and a crushing rendition of the tough blues "Black Dog". Well, I could go on and on, really. A beautiful, evocative "Stairway To Heaven", a great take on the acoustic folk-ballad "That's The Way", and a 14-minute medley of "Whole Lotta Love", John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillun", Bukka White's "Fixin' To Die", Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right", and the wonderful R&B-stomper "A Mess Of Blues" (Pomus/Shuman).

The sound and mixing on both discs is excellent, and the performances are almost uniformly great...rough and tough but by no means sloppy. Robert Plant is in fine form all the way through, and Jimmy Page completely fulfills the listener's expectations, playing crunchy rhythm guitar and creative, bluesy solos.
The ten-to-twenty minute versions of "Dazed And Confused", "You Shook Me", and "How Many More Times" are perhaps something of an acquired taste, and this is not really the place for newcomers to start, but fans will be delighted by these fiery, energetic live-in-the-studio recordings by Led Zeppelin in their prime.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST AT THEIR BEST   March 7, 2010
VOICE OF VICTORIA (VICTORIA AUSTRALIA)
People familiar with the 1973 and beyond Led Zep such as the Song Remains The Same movie will probably consider them to be the huge self indulgent behemoth that the 70's version of punks reviled. However even though their was even then, more to them than that stereotype, up until 1972 they were a young hungry band blending diverse influences brilliantly. On this album we see the highly skilled, capable, hungry improvising musicians. They know their craft but take nothing for granted. I love the first Whole Lotta Love. Nearer to the original and with staggering vocals from Plant. We hear their love of blues and rockabilly in the cover versions. I like all Led Zeppelin (most anyway) but particularly before they began to wear stage clothes and display a few pretensions. On these gigs every thing good about Led Zeppelin is to the fore and the indulgent (just because you can play Dazed and Confused for half an hour doesn't mean you should!) is kept to a minimum. What a thing it must have been to see Zep at this point in their career.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Live in studio Zep, tasty variations from the record versions   September 23, 2009
Chris bct (San Diego, CA USA)
I love the first two Zep albums. Unbelievable classics. I was lucky enough to see them 1971 before the 3rd lp came out. They previewed it live, Page using his bow, Plant having his quintessinal lead vocalist stage presence. Nuttin' like Zep live. This BBC material is really live in the studio and as such it's classic songs from the albums but presented with a live flavor and therefore, as Led Zeppelin would do, not performed the same as their album tracks. Very enjoyable cds. Worth the investment. In fact, if you were looking for something besides the studio tracks off the albums and wondered about what live material to get, this is a cost efficient one to buy. I also liked How the West Was Won, more excellent live and, of course, in that case with an arena audience.

5 out of 5 stars Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions   August 30, 2009
D. A. Ditzenberger (Marion, Iowa)
I think I pretty much have all the recorded history of this great band. As a avid follower of these guys I would have to say that this recording really shows the deep improv skills of these great musicians.... For people who think that they know what Zeppelin is all about give this a listen.... This is Led Zeppelin in the raw.... Charming, delightful, full of soul. For my taste this is a prime cut... Everyone should own this album first.....
