Mere months passed between the release of Neil Young's mid-career milestone Rust Never Sleeps and this 1979 tour recording, which documents a late-'78 San Francisco performance. Indeed, Live Rust boasts four songs from the album that gave it its name. It's also sequenced in the same spirit as its studio sibling. As with Rust Never Sleeps, Live Rust opens with steady-flowing acoustic numbers before swirling into an electric vortex. What was side 4 off the original two-record version--"Like a Hurricane," "Hey, Hey, My, My," and "Tonight's the Night"--is arguably Young and Crazy Horse at their peak as a live unit, with all due respect to 1991's estimable Weld and 1997's desultory Year of the Horse. Few rock bands rank with Young and his stalwart electric trio, and Live Rust presents them in all their raging glory. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Neil Young Album   June 9, 2010
R. Murry (South Texas)
The most I can say is that this is still my favorite since 1979 when I first heard it. Crazy Horse and Neil at their best in my opinion from acoustic to hard hitting electric. Good music to work to - keeps me motivated.

This is my favorite Neil Young. It has most of the songs from the Rust Never Sleeps tour.

Neil Young is one of the most creative people to have ever lived. The music of this album is a great work of art. There are many places where Mr. Young's skill with his guitar are very pleasingly evident. I forgot how good he is. This is also a testament to how pure and sweet his high notes were in his younger days. As I listened to this cd, I realized that he has a tremendous number of melodies that those who know him immediately recognize after three or four notes. And the poetry of his lyrics is astounding. In Cortez the Killer, the line "His subjects gathered round him like leaves around a tree". How beautiful a picture (even if it may have been more a wish than reality). Neil has painted some of the most beautiful and memorable pictures of any musician. There is the negative aspect of his which seems to be the failure of his music when he is preaching. His masterpieces greatly out way his failings, however. I believe that when all is said and done, Neil will shine brightly in the rockey sky.
