Am I hearing things now? Yes! Switched from 7.1 to 5.1 July 15, 2010 John Treble (Houston, TX USA) I needed a receiver that would switch my HDMI devices and allow my Samsung TV to remain on the DVI input for everything. Looked into an HDMI switch, but then my son-in-law talked me into getting this Denon unit to replace my Sony 7.1 receiver. The Denon 1610 is driving a Bose Acoustimass 6 speaker system, by the way.
The Denon 1610 comes with a sound calibration microphone that one uses to setup the sound envelope in your room. It's a bit complicated to get it all together but well worth the effort. The surround sound on this system is vastly superior to the Sony 7.1 system that I replaced. We are hearing sounds that we never quite heard before! It's amazing, really.
The HDMI switching feature is superb and now I don't have any problems switching from one activity to another using my Harmony remote. I can easily switch from cable to Blu-ray to Xbox with no effort at all.
This receiver is a lot of bang for the buck and I would recommend it to anyone who is setting up their home theater and doesn't want to spend a bloody fortune.
Incredible July 5, 2010 Jacob Rakozy (Dubuque, Iowa) After having a Sony receiver for 5 years which had served me faithfully, I decided it was time for an upgrade.....and what an upgrade I had done! I had heard about Denons and their power and ease of use and distinct sound clarity and with today's generation of HD connectivity, I needed a receiver that A) Had superior sound quality, B) Easy setup and C) HD abilities. When I came across this model I was taken aback, more so due to the crazy price that this beast provides! From the high-current wattage to the connectivity for HD sources to the Audio Calibration system to prestine audio clarity, this was worth every penny. I'm a movie buff, a huge music listener, and a video gamer so this machine did the job for everything I needed it to do. Sportin' a Bose home theatre system, playing video games such as Metal Gear Solid 4 or Resident Evil 5, the clarity and dramatic sound pouring out of them speakers has never been more thrilling for me! Watching movies like Saving Private Ryan or The Matrix in all its glory has brought new dimensions to my ears, and to broaden the listening environment, having my Apple Airport hooked up to my Denon, playing music wirelessly from my MacBook definitely has saved me traveling cost and tickets to see a concert. Another truly remarkable feature about this toy is the new Dolby Pro Logic IIz which provides an extended definition to Surround Sound....having two speakers sittin' overhead of the front channel speakers, the sound field is much bigger, much more to fill, and crazily entertaining with such titles like Transformers to keep you on your toes. Sure it requires an amp and another pair of speakers, I used my previous receiver and some run-downed Sony speakers to tinker around with the feature and it certainly is a new way to listen to soundtracks. All in all, this is a beautiful machine and recommend it for all who want to start a home theater project. It is simply amazing.....however, the manual is kind of lame in regards of explaining what certain things do...but for the most part, this is a product many will be pleased with. So with all of this, I leave with you 5 stars.
3rd amplifier in 20 years June 9, 2010 Irishwolf (Seattle, WA) I bought my first amplifier when I graduated college in 1988, it was a Kenwood which finally pooped out in 2000. I replaced that with another Kenwood which served me well until I wanted to get full HDMI audio/video. I looked at a lot of different amplifiers and chose this Denon based on the features, the price, and previous reviews. It has exceeded my expectations! I received it within 2 days from Amazon and watched the Glee season finale with it hooked up to my cable receiver. The sound was so incredibly rich after running the speaker set up with the microphone. I have very high ceilings in my loft and it has been hard to adjust my Bose speakers for optimal sound with my old Kenwood, even though I was using the fiber optic audio. I am just thrilled with this Denon, my first, but not last purchase from this manufacturer I am sure, especially since Kenwood is no longer in the home audio business.
Excellent Receiver June 7, 2010 M. Hasson (Lexington, KY) Everything I expected. I am already happy about my purchase and believe I have recevied great value from my purchase and have yet to tap into all the capabilities this receiver has.
