Brilliant September 30, 2008 Joseph A. Vanwanzeele A+, #1, new monster sound.. will rock your face off. Beautiful, powerful, original.. the first CD I've bought in years that was utterly worth the investment, and then some.
If you like breaks, electronic music, powerful bass, and powerful, original music in general.. You want this cd.
superb.
All Your Bass Are Belong to Bassnectar September 8, 2008 FlangeMechanism What would you get if you crossed the epic gorgeousness of Hybrid, the driving intensity of High Contrast, the spastic inventiveness of Luke Vibert, and the cold yet massive bass of early Mocean Worker? It would probably sound pretty much like Bassnectar, my favorite new artist.
I can't stop listening to "Simultaneous," "Replenish" and "Creation Lullaby" but really every track here owns. If you like any of the artists I named above you owe it to yourself to give Bassnectar a try.
A word about politics: with track titles like "Blue State Riddim" and "Viva Tibet," Bassnectar is, as you might guess, an activist liberal, and if your politics don't lean that way you might find this a turnoff. For my part I prefer to keep my politics and music separate, regardless of whether I agree with the politics or not. That said, I wouldn't care if Bassnectar was an Evangelical Mormon Scientologist with song lyrics about bombing the capital gains tax for Jesus, as long as his music is this good I will continue to listen to it.
Watch out, the full CD version is 2 disks - and some good tracks are missing. October 27, 2007 Robin Barooah (San Francisco, CA) I was about to buy this, when I noticed that 'Simultaneous', the track that I'd heard that brought me here was not in the listing. It turns out that the CD version of this is 2 disks, but the download includes only one of them.
Clearly the price isn't bad, and the music is still good. Just be aware that you're not getting all of it.
So who cares about random no name reviewers? All music says VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! April 20, 2007 Michael Joseph Hraba (Earth) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am a close direct fan of Lorin's fanbase here in SF, so I appreciated but reacted to the gent who gave this 3 stars, criticizing us as some vapid, aurally illiterate retards. Thanks for that... but I realized, so who is this guy?!?!? And who am I? Is it an important step in musical history? Is it only 3 1/2?
That is up for you to decide. My two cents is that is an amazing, layered and complex album that is at the base of a new scene here in SF.. sort of combining Trip Hop with the burning man, live music jam, and carnival scene.
I adore it.
But let's all listen to a REAL reviewer... someone paid to do it. Cheers!
Whoever the guy is who records under the name Bassnectar, he's picked a perfectly apt pseudonym. His sound is equally concerned with sweetness and with heavy grooves, and on what appears to be his debut album he's managed to attract an impressive array of like-minded musicians to help him realize his uniquely funkalicious vision. KRS-One, Buckethead, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Freq Nasty, and Michael Kang (from the String Cheese Incident) all put in appearances or make mixological contributions here, and for those who like by-the-numbers politics there are spoken word interludes courtesy of Noam Chomsky and Mumia Abu-Jamal. Luckily, the music is much more thoughtful and nuanced than the political pronunciamentos -- "Blue State Riddim" combines a glitchy sort of breakbeat sound with dubbed-up snatches of vocals, "Bursting" is a funky but contemplative exercise in a sort of faintly new age techno featuring Buckethead on uncharacteristically understated guitar, and "Creation Lullabye" rips apart several vocal source tapes and throws them back together again in the context of bleepy, blippy synth-funk. Especially lovely is the slowly churning "Dubuasca," which juxtaposes gorgeous female vocals with a jittery, almost junglish glitch beat and languid, melodic bass. Almost every track on these two discs is a different variation on one man's kaleidoscopically brilliant funk conception. Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide

Vaughan Mason has a protege! It's the next generation of funky bass. Other recommendations: Kung-Fu Breaks (CD) and Bass Check 1980-2006 by Slope (12").
